In Your Face: Melbourne Street Skating

in Your Face is a photography project documenting Melbourne’s street skating culture.

Over the summer of 2024 Ali MC wandered the streets of his hime city meeting and photographing skaters from all over the world.

In particular, the engagement of skaters with the urban environment and their relationship with the city’s landscape as a ‘concrete playground.’

The title of the project comes from the remark of former-Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, who claimed Melbourne’s skaters had an ‘in your face’ attitude.

My personal experience with skaters is the opposite - chilled out crew who love being in and around the city, and provide a unique flair and atmosphere.

The resultant project will be housed in the State Library of Victoria archives for future reference and will also be launched as a magazine and exhibition.

In Your Face was supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants.
